Why Florida Headlights Turn Cloudy
Most modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, which is lightweight and resistant to impact but vulnerable to sunlight. From the factory, each lens is protected by a thin clear coat that blocks ultraviolet radiation. In Florida, where the sun is intense for most of the year, that coating gradually breaks down, and the exposed plastic begins to oxidize. The result is the yellow, foggy haze that many drivers in Bradenton and Palmetto have learned to accept as normal.
That haze is more than a cosmetic problem. A cloudy lens scatters the light coming from the bulb, so less of it reaches the road ahead, and the beam that does get through is dimmer and less focused. Reduced visibility at night makes it harder to see pedestrians, animals, and debris in time to react. Restoring the lens is one of the most affordable ways to improve both the appearance and the safety of a vehicle.
Every restoration at Headlight Heroes follows the same careful process. We begin by inspecting the lens and masking the surrounding paint so that nothing is damaged. Next, we wet sand the surface with progressively finer grits to remove the failed clear coat and the oxidized layer beneath it. After sanding, we polish the lens until it is transparent again, and we finish with a UV-resistant clear coat that protects the plastic from the sun. Because we come to your home or workplace, the whole service is completed while you go about your day.
Keep Your Lenses Clear
- Wash your headlights regularly to remove dirt, bugs, and road film.
- Park in the shade or in a garage whenever it is possible.
- Apply a UV-protective sealant after cleaning or restoring the lenses.
- Address yellowing early, before the plastic becomes pitted or cracked.
Our work speaks best through results, so we photograph every vehicle before and after the restoration. The two sides of this silver SUV started out yellowed and dull, and each one finished clear and glossy.
